Fencing is a tactical sport and it teaches you to think on your feet. It is also a sport, which develops fitness with short bursts of intense exercise. It will improve your stamina and reflexes.

Can anyone fence?
The answer is yes. It caters for men [boys] and women [girls] of all abilities and ages and is a ‘sport for life’.
What does it cost?
Fencing can be a relatively inexpensive sport. Camden Fencing Club aims to has a very reasonable fee structure for juniors and for an hour and a half of coached exercise. Costs for adults are slightly more but still very competitive, please see the membership section. This includes high quality professional coaching/teaching and access to basic equipment, which is used for training at club.
What equipment is supplied by the club?
All fencing specific equipment is supplied by the club.
Fencers who compete can borrow kit from the club but will be encouraged to buy their own equipment and costs are determined like in most sports, by your level of performance.
The club operates a strict dress code whereby all fencers training with a weapon larger than size 3 during club sessions are required to wear fencing breeches.
Is the sport safe?
There is always an element of risk in all sport, but fencing with developments in safety of equipment is considered one of the safest sports.
For example the masks are made of stainless steel and all other clothing has a high newton rating to make it extremely robust. The equipment despite its safety specifications is light to wear.
Camden Fencing Club carries out regular checks on all its equipment by its Safety Officer, Armourer and Coaches.
What are the different weapons?
There are three weapons used in competitive sport. These are Foil, Epee and Sabre.
Camden Fencing Club offers the Foil and Sabre Weapons.
Foil is the lightest weapon. You score hits with the point on the trunk of the body above waist. There are conventions, which determines who scores hits.
Epee is the heavier and traditionally the dueling weapon. You score hits with the point on all parts of the body including arms and legs. The conventions are more straightforward than foil.
Sabre is a cutting weapon and traditionally the cavalry weapon. You score hits with the side of the blade on all areas above waist including arms and head. There are conventions similar to foil.
At what age can you compete in fencing competitions?
There are fencing competitions in the UK for all ages.
Children start in the Leon Paul Junior Series where they progress through the following age groups: Under 9, under 11, under 13, under 15. From there fencers will progress through cadet (under 17) and junior (under 20) levels.
For adults (seniors) there are novice and intermediate competitions for less experienced fencers as well as open events across the country. Once a fencer reaches their 40s they can continue to compete in senior events but also take part in veteran tournaments.
When can I start?
It is a sport requiring a level of concentration and we do not recommend that you start before the age of 7.
Mini Fence which uses foam weapons can be introduced at an earlier age.
