The GB team then faced Romania in another close fight in the bronze medal play off; GB eventually closing out their opponents 45-39 for a well deserved 3rd place finish. In the boys team event Gabriel Van Hoffelen was a member of the GB B team which finished 5th (losing eventually to GB A team,) whilst Camden A and Camden B teams finished 17th and 20th respectively, both losing their first D.E. matches. In the senior satelite event on the Sunday JJ Webb was 5th losing 15-13 to Will Deary, whilst Soji Aiyenuro and Curtis Miller finished in the L16. It was the first time that any of them had represented Great Britain on foreign soil.
Unfortunately Lumeng Yang was rather off form on this occasion and did not progress beyond the first round poule. Gabriel Van Hoffelen won 3 lost 3 in the first round but was then unfortuately eliminated in the second round with 2 victories 4 defeats. The star of the show was however Zach Klein who in a strong field of 225 fencers (all of Europe's top nations were present) finished 32nd. Zach won 3 lost 3 in the first round, won 2 lost 4 in the second round and was seeded 117 going in to the direct elimination. At this stage Zach faced the number 12 seed Mokhov (RUS) whom he disposed of 15/14 in a thrilling encouter. Zach's next opponent was Ottaviani (ITA) whom he beat 15-13. At the last 32 stage he came up against Sugimoto (JPN), and despite taking the correct parry at 14-14 he rushed his riposte leaving just one light for the Japanese fencer. After this defeat Zach fenced the rather awkward Glasner (POL) in the repecharge but was unfortunately defeated 15-9 to finish in 32 place. This was an excellent result for the Camden fencer, one which moves him to number 6 in the British rankings. In the team event Lumeng was part of the GBR A team which finished a very creditable 7th place from 38 teams. In the mens event there were 41 teams. Gabriel was a part of the GBR D team which lost to the GBR B team 45-43 in the last 32. Zach in the GBR B team lost 45-41 to the GBR A team in the last 8. GBR A team went on to finish an excellent 2nd place; losing to hosts Hungary in the final. Well done guys !! A reminder that the next round of the Camden Trophy will take place tomorrow night Tuesday 4th October at the usual Westminster Academy Tuesday venue.
