Congratulations to Jack Horrix for an excellent 2nd place at the British Universities and Colleges Sports Championships at the weekend, and also to fellow Camden fencers James Potter and Gianfranco Artesi who made the quarter finals (5th and 8th respectively).
It was a large entry in the mens' Sabre event and Camden had 6 fencers that made the last 16 stage or better. In the quarter finals Gianfranco was beaten 15-12 by Caspian Watt, Jack beat Andrew Williamson 15/14 and James Potter (who had beaten another Camden Fencer Nuno Esteves in the L16) was beaten 15-13 by Sam Cooper. In the semis Jack kept his head in another close fought encounter again winning 15-14. In the final Jack faced GB junior team member Josh Maxwell, however Josh proved too strong for Jack winning 15/5. This was a great result for Jack and good to see him back in winning ways !! A full list of Camden places were: 2nd Jack Horrix 5th James Potter 8th Gianfranco Artesi 9th Nathan Potter 12th Nuno Esteves 16th Chris Erickson 17th Achilles Bergne 18th Will Moore 23rd Christian Lindsay 36th Julian Ghosh Well done guys, great set of results !! Congratulations to Camden's Aliya Itzkowitz who made the last 32 in the Athens senior World Cup event on Saturday. Aliya won 5 victories in the first round poule, losing only to Brigitta Pentek (HUN). At this stage of the competition GB team mates performances were as follows: Kate Daykin 2V 4D, Alex Davis 1V 5D, Sarah-Jane Hampson 1V4D, Letitia Steer 0V 5D and club mate Bridget Pleasant was 1V 5D.
Sadly only Sarah-Jane, Kate and Aliya progressed from the poule stages, but then Kate and Sarah-Jane fell at the next hurdle in the last 128 (Sarah-Jane lost 15-9 to Au (HKG) and Kate lost 15-8 to Savitskaya (KAZ)). As a result of her high seeding Aliya had a bye to the second days competition. On the second day in the last 64 Aliya faced the strong and experienced Kovaleva (RUS) and in a very close fight the British fencer closed out her opponent in an excellent 15-13 win. At this stage Aliya faced world number 2 Jiyeon Kim (KOR) whom she'd lost to in New York this season and unfortunately despite a spirited performance again the Korean proved too tough an opponent and she lost 15-9. Nethertheless an excellent result in only her second World Cup event during the last year; despite scoring on only two results Aliya now holds the highest GB womens' sabre world ranking. Many thanks, Shilpi Well done to Soji Aiyenuro who remains at the top of the Camden club rankings with another Trophy win on Tuesday night. It was the largest and strongest Camden Trophy for a while and when one club member heard his first round poule he joked "the only fencers missing to complete this poule are Szilagyi and Montano"....it was indeed a tough one !! Semi final encounters saw Sam Gibbs pull off an impressive win over JJ Webb and Soji Aiyeneuro defeat Chris Erickson. In the final Sam was unable to deal with Soji's speed and change of pace but settled for a well earnt 2nd place.
Congratulations to Jovana Gospavic and Katrina Wong who both won bronze medals at the Winter Tournamant organised by the London Region on 29th January.
The intermediate Sabre category was won by Lea Oljaca with Daniela Boanardi 2nd, Agnes Oroszlan & Camden's Jovana Gospavic joint 3rd. The novice catetory was won by Louise Dickson with Sherry Xu 2nd and Camden's Katrina Wong 3rd. Fencers came from as far afield as Stratford upon Avon and Southampton to enter the Winter Tournament. Well done to Camden's Mens A team who finished 2nd at the British Team Championships on 29th January.
Camden entered three mens and one womens teams in to these championships. Unfortunately our ladies team (Bridget Pleasant, Helen Fairhead, Danielle Einchcomb) were forced to abandon during the poules stage as Helen ruptured her achilles tendion - we wish her a speedy recovery. In the poule stage of the mens event our A team (Soji Aiyenuro, Curtis Miller, Jonathan Webb, Nathan Potter) won all their fights but unfortunately the same could not be said for our B team (Sam Gibbs, Steve Pope, Cedric Levy-Bencheton) or our C team (Phil Elliot, Tamas Varju, John Thorp, David McDougall) whom in tough poules failed to gain a victory. The two teams then fenced off for 9th place with the B team winning the encounter 45/16. The A team were drawn in the last 8 against City of London Strike force, whom they beat comfortably 45-22, leading them in to tough semi final encounter against City of London strike force, a team which had several former British team members. In a close faught match Camden came out on top, winning 45-40 which meant that in the final they would face Truro A who had beaten Truro B 45-26 in the other semi final. The final was a close and exciting encounter in which Camden lead for part of the match, unfortunately they were unable to hold on to the lead and Truro (Deary, Honeybone, Luchetti, Saunders) came our eventual winner 45-36. Nethertheless an excellent and well deserved 2nd place for Camden and congratulations to Truro for their win. In the 3rd place fight off City of London Reds (Mottershead, Crutchett, Rock, Slankard) beat Truro B (Howes, Craze, Holdsworth) 45-35. Congratulations to Bridget Pleasant and JJ Webb who both won bronzes at the Leon Paul British Open on 28th January.
In the womens event Bridget was seeded first after the poules and with 15-6 wins over both Harriet Davies and then Jennie Tillott she cruised through to a semi finals encouter against Harriet Dixon. Despite leading to the break Bridget's opponent came back at her in the second half and edged Bridget out 15-13 in an exciting fight. In the other semi final Daisy Hutton beat Kate Daykin 15-12 but then lost to Harriet in the final 15-7. Congratulations also to Helen Fairhead who finished 7th in her first event back since taking some time out of fencing. Camden had a large contingent in the Mens' event with two of them battling through to the last eight tableau; these were Soji Aiyenuro and JJ Webb. At this stage Soji was beaten 15-13 by James Edwards and JJ beat Zach Hamilton 15-6. In the semi final JJ came up against his old rival and British team mate Will Deary and was unfortunately beaten 15-11, in the other semi James Edwards beat Jamie Craze 15-14. Will went on to win the competition beating James 15-8 in the final.
